‘Best I Ever Had’

The Knickerbockers did it!  Man, I can’t even imagine what the atmosphere would have been in New York if the Knicks couldn’t land the Mr. Melo.  This is great.  For anyone who thinks this isn’t great for basketball, think again.  Look at the teams with major stars:  Chicago, Boston, Dallas, L.A., New York, Oklahoma City, San Antonio, Orlando, and Miami.  Not only do they have stars, but the cities themselves for the most part are large and in charge U.S. cities.  Heck, even check out the second tier teams like Atlanta, New Orleans and Utah have legit All-Stars.  I’ve had this on the tip of my tongue for some time and have not publically said so, but the NBA is the best it’s ever been.  Whether your still clinging to the 1980’s Celtics/Lakers rivalry or the Jordan era of the 1990’s, like it or not, the NBA is at a all-time high.  Don’t believe me?  Why not?  Nostalgia?  Honestly, how many teams could have possibly won the NBA championship during the Jordan Era?  Not many.  How about in the 1980’s?  Not many.  Really, go back and look at which of those teams you could really envision holding the trophy as the Celtics/Lakers sat home and watched.  Picture Jordan losing titles, or not in the finals?  It’s to hard to picture that happening.  You want stars in major markets?  You want parody in today’s NBA?  YOU HAVE BOTH! How many teams could prospectively win the world championship this season?  You could argue between 6 and 8 teams!  When else was that true?  Sure, we’ve had 3, 4, maybe 5 contenders, but 6-8?  And I’m not even counting Oklahoma or New York.  And that 6-8 number could grow, that’s the best part.  Should the Knicks land a top point guard in Chris Paul or Deron Williams, now they’re in the mix too.  People cry wolf because the Memphis’, Charlotte’s, and the Toronto’s of the world aren’t competing…but where they ever?  The league is thriving as it is, and the Melo deal just made it better than ever!  Check the numbers to back me up.  The All-Star game this past weekend was the highest viewed ASG since 1998!! Whether you think the Dunk Contest was good or bad, it was the highest viewed contest ever!  Maybe because were in the moment we can’t fully appreciate it, but the NBA is in a prime that we’re watching unfold.  There’s  never been so many stars, that are all so young, that are all in hot spot cities, all playing for winners.  Go through the playoff matchups if the season were to end now and tell me which series you wouldn’t watch.  Every single one is interesting.  Maybe I’m to young and my point of is jaded.  Maybe my NBA history ‘sample size’ is too small.  Or maybe I’m right.  Maybe this is the second coming of the league’s golden age where 8 NBA teams have multiple Hall of Famers.  An age we’ll look back and say 3 or 4 of the 10 best players in league history laced up their shoes in 2011 (LeBron, Kobe, Duncan, Dwight?).  Props to New York for pulling off the biggest trade the Knicks have had in Decades.  Props to Denver for having the guts to pull the trigger and getting something in return.  And props to the NBA as a whole for being the best I’ve ever had.

Neither Dirk nor Melo know how to play defense so I wouldn’t want either of them. Give me DWill over either.

Love this post and couldn’t agree more with it. Glad you had the boldness to just say these NBA days are better than they’ve ever been. Its like the Jordan era or the 80s is a “sacred cow” that can’t be compared to. This is a great age we’re seeing and it might even get better depending on where Williams, CP3 and DHoward end up.
That being said I don’t think this makes the Knicks contenders. Not as long as D’antoni is coaching. Not as long as Melo or STAT can’t even spell defense. But it’s a HUGE piece of bait for one of the above mentioned free agents of 2012.

Theres no question the league is more competitive now than it’s been in a LONG time. Byesline is right i think if any of those top 7-8 teams won it all it wouldn’t be a huge shock. Sure there would be surprise if it wasn’t boston miami LA or SA but we’ve seen Orlando Chicago Dallas and OKC be so good this year that i wouldn’t call it a fluke if they won it all. The NBA is back.

Carmelo is a top 10 player in the NBA, i dont understand how someone could say he wont help there situation.

Kobe, Lebron, Durant, Wade, Dwight, CP3, D Williams, Nash, Dirk, Pau…. He is NOT a top 10 player. All he is is a volume scoring who will struggle in MDAs efficiency-based offense (career 31% 3pt%, 1:1 A/to;150th! in the league in TS% yet 2nd in the league in usage). And while many won’t see a problem with Melo’s inability to cover anyone who is better offensively than, say, Thabo Sefolosha, because they believe in D’Antoni’s supposed aversion to that half of the game, this too is a problem. When MDA’s system works (as it did with the Suns in 2005-6-7) his teams actually do play defense: they were constantly ranked in the top 10 in the league in defensive efficiency, and were 7th in 2007. My main points: 1) his effeiciency on offense sucks 2) his defense sucks however you measure it 3) he’s not quite the player everyone thinks he is. He is more Monta Ellis than Dwayne Wade, hence the reason he is ranked 60th in the NBA in Win Shares Produced (right behind Monta).

I know I’m using a lot of non-traditional “advanced” basketball statistics to back up my points, but it seems that rather than just relying on your gut to determine how good a player is you should try to determine his worth with factual backing and thats what ive tried to do. I’m not saying Melo’s not a good player; I think he gives the Knicks a lot. They were a terrible rebounding team and Melo gets the most rebounds per game in the NBA of anyone who isn’t a 4 or 5 (7.6 per). The Knicks didn’t have a closer to get the ball to who could score down the stretch in Iso situations, Carmelo is among the best, if not the best, at this. I might even say that the Knicks are better today than they were yesterday; I’m still not sure. But make no mistake, “we” didn’t get a Kobe or Lebron or even a Dirk.

Finally, I agree with BL’s overall point. The NBA does seem to be more exciting than ever.

Spin the numbers any which way you want man, all I know is that if you think the KNicks wont win more games with Melo and billups u need ur bell rung. DiAntonie system sucks and never works in the end, contrary to ur Suns example..those teams never got it done big picture. And saying Dirk is better than melo is just not correct man, not on any level.

lololol comparing Dirk to melo? Dirk disappears in the post season

      • Kyle says:

Dirks been to the finals though! Melo is a post season loser!

      • James says:

Dirk is the one who disappears in the post season? He has been to more conference finals and more nba finals than melo. And saying Melo is better than Dirk is “just not correct man, not on any level.” Dirk’s FG% is 8% higher, his 3pt% is 10% higher(!), his ft% 6% higher, he gets just as many assists as Melo does (2.6 to 2.8) and he turns the ball over far less. Dont even get me started on how much better Dirk does on advanced stats (win shares, PER, Hollingers nba player rankings); also if you dont even know how to spell d’antoni you probably don’t know much about him, his system or the league in general. I will try to explain this to you using the simplest possible terms: plus/minus is about as easy to understand as it gets. it measures how much better a team is when a player is on the court than when he is off of it. It is a great indicator of a player’s contribution; Dirk is 9th in the league in this category. Ya boy Melo is 46th. The numbers don’t have to be spun, Dirk is a better player period.

even tho Melo is in NY i think theyre still not one of the best teams in the east..miami boston orlando are all better. Melos good but still doesnt make knicks a REAL contendor

    • Tim K says:

Ur a fool. Melo, STAT, Fields, Turiaf, Billups. Sick ass starting 5 in the East. Watch.

      • K slay says:

umm no, like i said all those teams are still better. R they better than they were last week, who gives a hoot if they have 5 starters, still not better than top 3 or 4 teams in the own conference woohoooo
